Industry agrees to reduce salt levels in processed foods
07/09/2005 - 12:20:14The main players in the Irish food industry have agreed to reduce the level of salt in their products in the coming years, according to the Food Safety Authority.
The body said a wide range of food companies had agreed to support a national salt reduction policy by reducing the level of sodium in their goods between now and 2010.
Health experts have been warning that large numbers of Irish people eat too much salt and this consumption was causing heart disease and other illnesses.
Up to 70% of the average Irish person's daily salt intake comes from manufactured foods.
