Govt to make effort to reduce Taoiseach’s Dáil duties
07/09/2005 - 07:50:56The Government is expected to table proposals today that opposition parties say would undermine their capacity to question the Taoiseach on important issues.
The proposals, first announced earlier this year, would see Bertie Ahern getting prior notice of any queries to be raised during leader's questions in the Dáil.
They would also allow the Taoiseach to refer certain questions to the minister with the responsibility for the issue under discussion.
The plans are expected to be tabled today at a meeting of an Oireachtas sub-committee that is examining reform of Dáil procedures.
The opposition parties are vehemently opposed to the change and reports this morning said the Government had promised that they would not be imposed without consensus.
