AA slams ESRI call for speedy imposition of carbon taxes

The AA has criticised calls by the Government's economic think-tank for the speedy introduction of carbon taxes to tackle greenhouse gas emissions.

In a report published today, the Economic and Social Research Institute says such taxes are needed to help Ireland meet its commitments under the Kyoto Protocol on tackling climate change.

However, the AA has claimed that increasing tax on petrol, for instance, would not reduce car usage as massive price increases over the past year had not reduced petrol consumption.

The organisation said the Government should instead be reducing fuel taxes to alleviate rising petrol prices.
