Halmahera bids for glorious farerwell
Halmahera will bid to end his racing career on a high at Doncaster tomorrow when he bids for a fourth consecutive success in the totesport Portland Handicap.
Kevin Ryan plans to retire his long-serving 10-year-old following the competitive five-and-a-half-furlong dash, in which he will face 21 rivals.
Halmahera has landed the Portland for the past three years but has been without a success since his head victory over Texas Gold 12 months ago, although Ryan believes his charge is as good as ever.
He said: “He is in great form, is drawn well (21), the ground won’t be a problem and I could not be happier with him.
“There is no sign of age catching up with him at all, he is as good as he ever has been and he bows out tomorrow. After the race that will be it for him.
“It would be great if he could win again but I think it will be a tall order, although I said that the second year and again the third year.
“As long as he runs and comes back safe and sound I will be happy – anything else is a bonus.”
