Antony and the Johnsons scoop Mercury Prize
06/09/2005 - 23:48:13Antony and the Johnsons were named winners of the Nationwide Mercury Prize tonight.
Their album I Am A Bird Now beat a shortlist of 12 including hot favourites Kaiser Chiefs, Coldplay and The Magic Numbers.
But their victory immediately provoked controversy.
The band are American but qualify for the British-only £20,000 (€29,600) prize because singer Antony Hegarty was born in the UK.
