4,000 will die as a result of Chernobyl blast

Experts have estimated that around 4,000 people will die from the effects of the 1986 accident at Chernobyl.

The figure, which was published in the Chernobyl Forum report, is much lower than other estimates.

It had been suggested that tens or even hundreds of thousands of lives were at risk after the radiation leak.

The explosion, in Chernobyl's number four reactor, sent a radioactive cloud across Europe.
