Study finds new treatment can reduce blood pressure risks
05/09/2005 - 10:55:50A study involving Irish people with high blood pressure has found that patients on a new treatment regime are significantly less likely to suffer a stroke or heart attack.
The seven-year study involved 19,000 people from Ireland, Britain and Scandinavia, half of whom were given a cholesterol-lowering drug and the other a combination of newer medicines.
The results showed that the newer drugs reduced the risk of strokes by around 25% and heart attacks by 15%.
Around 700,000 Irish people are currently being treated for high blood pressure.
