New strain of MRSA bug reported

A new strain of the superbug MRSA is present in Ireland.

The new PVL strain is acquired outside of hospitals and is a potentially deadly toxin which attacks the immune system, and can cause a number of serious infections.

Five people arrived in accident and emergency departments of Dublin hospitals last year with PVL.

Prior to this, the only reported cases of the MRSA in Ireland were inside hospitals.
