Girl escaped abduction bid when attackers panicked
A teenage girl escaped an abduction attempt in Newry at the weekend after a three-man gang panicked when they saw a couple in the area, it emerged today.
The 17-year-old sustained a black eye on the right hand side of her face, a bruise and cut to the other eye, a cut to her right knee and cuts to the left leg during the bid to pull her into a blue saloon car on the Chancellor Road at around 3.30am yesterday.
Police said the victim was walking along the road when the car with tinted windows and an R plate on the back window pulled up alongside her.
A rear passenger opened the door and said: “Come with us“.
He got out of the saloon with the front seat passenger and they both tried to pull her inside by the arms.
However the trio abandoned their plan when they saw a couple walking along Chancellors Road.
The car sped off towards Doran’s Hill. The gang were described as being in their 20s and all three had Newry accents.
The couple walked the injured female a short distance along the road before parting company.
Police urged the couple to come forward to help their investigation as a matter of urgency.
They also want to identify the car and its occupants and appealed to anyone who saw a saloon in the area fitting its description.
