Doctors at Navan hospital may withdraw emergency cover

05/09/2005 - 07:58:39
Medical staff at Our Lady's Hospital in Navan are threatening to withdraw emergency cover from this evening onwards unless the hospital agrees to recruit more junior doctors.

The Irish Medical Organisation has claimed some junior doctors are currently working 24-hour shifts and up to 120 hours-a-week because of a lack of staff.

The Health Service Executive is apparently blaming a government employment ceiling for the situation.

The executive is due to meet with IMO officials later today in an effort to resolve the dispute.

The IMO has already instructed its members to stop providing emergency cover from 5pm unless an agreement to recruit more junior doctors is reached.
