New York Times criticises Bush’s response to disaster

US President George W Bush was heavily criticised today for his response to the devastation in New Orleans caused by Hurricane Katrina.

America's paper of record - The New York Times - accused him of being "casual to the point of carelessness" in his speech to the nation yesterday.

Mr Bush appeared to grin during the speech in which he said that "recovery will take years".
