Tipp to seek new hurling management

01/09/2005 - 08:34:42
The Tipperary hurlers are officially managerless today after their County Board decided for a "complete change of management" at senior level.

Former Tipp goalkeeper Ken Hogan, whose managerial term unofficially ended when the Premier county disappointingly lost their All-Ireland quarter-final to Galway last month, had hopes of retaining the position.

But rumours of crank phone calls and poison pen letters to Hogan, on top of player unrest in the aftermath of the loss to Galway, would have done little for the cause of the Lorrha clubman, who took over from Michael Doyle in October 2003.

Hogan, along with selectors Jack Bergin and Colm Bonnar, started Tipp's 2005 championship in fine style with a two-goal win over Clare before losing to Cork in the Munster final. Galway then launched a stunning comeback to pip Hogan's charges by two points in their last-eight meeting.

A Tipperary County Board statement confirmed tonight: "At a meeting of the Tipperary GAA County Board on Wednesday evening, August 31, it was decided to get a complete change of management at Senior Hurling level.

"This proposal was put to the meeting after a recommendation from the eight man sub-committee tasked with putting in place a management team for 2006. This was approved by an earlier meeting of the County Executive and unanimously endorsed by the County Board.

"The Tipperary County Board would like to express their sincere gratitude to the outgoing management team of Ken Hogan, Colm Bonnar and Jack Bergin for their efforts in the past two seasons."
