Martin praises consumer guru Eddie Hobbs
01/09/2005 - 16:20:19Consumer advocate Eddie Hobbs received praise from an unlikely source today.
Minister for Enterprise Micheál Martin admitted he thought the show Rip-Off Republic, which exposed profiteering and government over-spending was helping raise public awareness about Ireland's high cost of living.
The presenter's straight-talking style has irritated Fianna Fáil backbenchers and been a thorn in the Government's side, criticising cost overruns on public spending projects and the level of indirect taxation.
But the minister said some good may come of it: “The programme has hit hard. It’s done so in a polemical manner that has actually created an awareness that ultimately can bear some dividends.”
