Cullen rejects criticism of private speed camera system
01/09/2005 - 13:20:04Transport Minister Martin Cullen has defended the Government's plans to privatise the operation of speed cameras in Ireland.
Critics have claimed a private system will inevitably see the system used as a means to generate revenue rather than prevent road accidents.
However, Mr Cullen insisted today that the system would remain under Government control and that payments to the private firm would not be linked to the number of motorists caught breaking the law.
He also said he wanted the cameras to be clearly visible and located in accident blackspots.
