Hundreds feared dead in bridge stampede near Shiite shrine

Al-Jazeera television has reported that more than 200 pilgrims perished in Baghdad today in a huge crush when a railing on a bridge across the Tigris River collapsed.

Some of the pilgrims fell off the al-Aima Bridge and drowned in the Tigris, said a police officer on the scene.

Television reports said about one million pilgrims from many parts of Baghdad and from outlying provinces had gathered near the Imam Mousa al-Kadim shrine in the capital’s Kazimiyah district for the annual commemoration the death of the Shiite saint.
