Ladies first as Dublin play Tyrone in Croker clash

22/08/2005 - 10:41:43
The Dublin v Tyrone Ladies Football quarter-final is to act as a curtain raiser next Saturday to the men's All-Ireland quarter-final replay between the same counties at Croke Park.

The GAC has scheduled the ladies match for 12.45pm while the second tie is due for throw-in at 2.30pm.

Ladies Gaelic Football Association President Geraldine Giles welcomed the decision. "This decision is a great boost to both the Dublin and Tyrone Ladies football teams and gives them the opportunity to play in front of a big crowd in Croke Park," she said.

There are several family ties linking the Dublin and Tyrone men's and ladies teams. Dublin goalkeeper Stephen Cluxton is a brother of Dublin ladies defender Avril Cluxton and Tyrone ladies defender Anne Dooher is a sister of Tyrone captain Brian.

John O'Leary, who manages the Dublin ladies team, was captain when Dublin last won the All-Ireland in 1995, beating Tyrone in the final.
