Devenney denies retiring from Donegal side

22/08/2005 - 10:58:14
There is confusion in Ulster over the supposed retirement of Donegal forward Brendan Devenney from inter-county football.

A Donegal newspaper ran a story last week stating the 29-year-old Devenney had confirmed to he would not be making himself available for the county team next season.

But Devenney told today's Belfast Telegraph he did not know the source of this story, insisting last week's report was not true.

The St Eunan's clubman, who was first selected for Donegal in 1997, has a disappointing 2005 campaign, missing a late penalty in last month's All-Ireland qualifier loss to Cavan.

The speculation regarding Devenney's future may only relax when the Tir Chonaill men regroup for next season with a new manager in tow.

Former Mayo boss John Maughan, current Fermanagh manager Charlie Mulgrew and former Donegal manager Declan Bonner have all been mentioned in the media as possible successors to Brian McEniff.

The Donegal county board expect to have a new man in place for 2006 next month.
