Sunderland debut for Stubbs
Former Everton skipper Alan Stubbs made his debut for Sunderland on the ground which last season saw him the victim of a horror tackle from red-carded Milan Baros, an assault Stubbs described as “cowardly”.
Stubbs is now at the heart of a Sunderland side trying to end a shocking record of 16 successive Premiership defeats, dating back to their relegation season.
Former Liverpool man Stephen Wright was ruled out through injury, allowing Nyron Nosworthy his debut at right-back following a summer move from Gillingham.
Liverpool had Djibril Cisse in the starting line-up, with Luis Garcia dropping to the bench in an otherwise unchanged side from the one that drew 0-0 at Middlesbrough last week.
