Jermain Defoe gave watching England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson another reminder of his clinical finishing skills as Tottenham maintained their unbeaten start to the new Barclays Premiership campaign.

Defoe’s sensational 48th-minute strike – his second of the season – lit-up a gritty encounter at White Hart Lane.

Defoe, who was substituted by Eriksson at half-time during England’s 4-1 mauling by Denmark in midweek, collected the ball midway in the Boro half and unleashed a powerful 25-yard drive that left visiting goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer beaten all ends up.

Spurs, who have yet to concede a goal in two games, completed their victory when Schwarzer allowed Mido’s tame shot to squeeze under his body and into the net in the 75th minute.
