FG blames Govt for failure rate in Leaving Cert maths

17/08/2005 - 11:00:28
Fine Gael has blamed government inaction for the high failure rate in maths and science subjects at Leaving Cert level.

Exam results out today show that 12.5% of students who sat Ordinary Level maths failed to pass, as did 4.2% of students who sat the Higher Level paper.

Failure rates were also relatively high in physics, chemistry and biology.

Fine Gael TD Olwyn Enright said the Government was at least partly to blame for failing to implement the recommendations of a task force set up to examine how to address the situation.

"The Government talk a very good game about going into research and development and how that's the way forward for Ireland," she said.

"But they've failed to put an awful lot of the recommendations of the task force on physical sciences in place and we're seeing the results of that today unfortunately."
