IBEC concerned about failure rate in Leaving Cert maths
17/08/2005 - 07:29:26The employers' body IBEC has expressed concern about the failure rate in maths at Leaving Cert level.
Exam results out today show that 12.5% of students who sat Ordinary Level maths failed to pass, as did 4.2% of students who sat the Higher Level paper.
These figures are well above the failure rate in other subjects and IBEC said it was concerned that many students were being ruled out of the very courses that the Government is trying to promote.
Spokesman Brendan Butler said this was adding to a problem where fewer and fewer people were taking science subjects because they are perceived as too difficult.
