Result due in DART drivers' ballot on train boycott

15/08/2005 - 11:21:50
A result is expected this evening in a DART drivers' ballot on a possible boycott of new, longer trains being introduced by Iarnród Eireann.

The drivers are seeking extra money for driving the new trains, which are two carriages longer than the current six-carriage vehicles.

Their unions have argued that they are entitled to more money because of increased productivity, but the Labour Court has already ruled that they should drive the new trains for no extra pay.

SIPTU said it had invited Iarnród Eireann to new talks on the matter in an effort to avoid any disruption to services.

The company, however, is insisting that the Labour Court ruling must be accepted and wants the drivers to begin testing the new trains tonight.
