Petrol bombers target car crash police
Police responding to a car crash came under attack today from petrol bombers.
Officers were responding to an accdent involving a taxi and a car in Rossville Street, Derry, when the device was hurled at them by youths who also pelted the PSNI with stones.
An ambulance had already been summoned to the area.
No-one was injured during the disturbances which occurred at around 2pm.
The attack was condemned by nationalist SDLP Assembly member Pat Ramsey.
“Rossville Street is one of the busiest pedestrian areas in this city, with people coming from the Credit Union or parking their cars,” the Foyle MLA said.
“People in the Bogside will be outraged by this appalling act.
“These police officers were coming to assist people in a road traffic accident. It is sickening that young people would take advantage of the emergency services and attack them.
“To those carrying out such attacks, this seems almost to be recreational violence. However there is a real danger of lives being lost, especially in an area as urbanised as Rossville Street with people living in bungalows.”
Last night a Post Office depot was also targeted by petrol bombers in the city.
Two vans were damaged when up to four devices were hurled over a wall into the base at Little James Street in the city, police said.
No injuries were reported following the attack last night.
Detectives investigating the petrol-bombing said they were keeping an open mind over possible motives.
Any witnesses have been urged to contact police at Strand Road in Derry.
