Poor start for Woods
Tiger Woods opened his final round at the USPGA Championship at Baltusrol with a bogey at the 478-yard first.
The world number one, who had dropped a shot at the same hole yesterday, was already six behind Phil Mickelson and Davis Love.
He once again missed the fairway on the right. He was not under a tree this time, but his second from the rough ran through the green and he failed to get up and down.
The Masters and British Open champion, who dropped from 20th to 22nd as a result, had hit back for a 66 yesterday, but had a much lower target than that in mind.
Thomas Bjorn had shown him it was possible with a major championship record-equalling 63 – the third achieved at the New Jersey course.
None of the early starters was able to make significant progress and a week that began promisingly for England’s Luke Donald ended on a disappointing note again.
Donald, who after his third-place finish in the Masters got off to good starts at the US Open and British Open only to fall back, had a double bogey and three bogeys in a five-over-par front nine of 39.
He did at least come home in one under, but eight over for the tournament made him an also-ran.
Steve Webster, playing his first-ever event in the States, and Paul Casey were one stroke better – they scored 71 and 72 respectively – but European interest was very much alive as the final major of the season entered its final lap.
Bjorn was only one behind Mickelson and Love and Nottinghamshire pair Lee Westwood and Greg Owen were only three back in joint eighth.
