McGinley putts his finger on the problem

14/08/2005 - 21:05:13
Paul McGinley completed the final major of the season and was still waiting for the putts to drop.

The Dubliner by no means disgraced himself, closing with a 69 for a three-over-par and ‘mid-table’ finish.

But he said: “The best I’ve ever putted was Wentworth (he finished second in the BMW Championship in May) and I haven’t had a decent putting tournament since.

“It’s amazing. I only had one three-putt and I made all of the two and three-footers, right in the centre every time.

“But the 12, 15, 20, 30, 40-footers haven’t gone in. There’s a goalkeeper in there and he’s playing great!

“I have to say I’ve struggled reading the greens – normally one of my strengths – but the big positive I take away is that I’ve played three major championships this year, have putted moderately in all three and I’m still going to be within 10 shots of winning each of them.”
