14/08/2005 - 10:34:36
Gardaí today launched a murder probe after a man was shot dead outside his home near Cork city.

The victim, who was in his mid 20s, was gunned down as he walked from his car to the front door of his house in Ballincollig at 10pm last night.

Witnesses in the Greenfields area, who included teenagers, heard several shots.

Gardaí said the victim was known to them and was originally from the west side of the city.

A detective said: “The gunman was waiting in a nearby car with a driver until the deceased arrived.

“He then pulled a gun from bushes and shot him several times.”

A large area around the scene has been cordoned off for a forensic examination.

A post mortem on the victim will take place today at Cork University Hospital.

Investigating officers at Gurranabraher garda station say the 29-year-old was removed to Cork University Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

“No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing,” a garda spokesman said.

Officers have appealed for information from anybody who was in the area at the time of the incident.
