14/08/2005 - 17:38:49
Gardaí have named the victim of last night's fatal shooting in Cork city as 29-year-old Eric Cummins.

Mr Cummins was shot several times in his front garden in Ballincollig at around 10pm yesterday.

It is reported that two men were waiting for him in a blue Honda car outside his home in the Oldcourt estate in Greenfields, Ballincollig, where he lived with his partner and a child.

Mr Cummins is believed to have been known to the Gardaí for involvement in drug dealing in the area.

His body has been taken to Cork University hospital where a post-mortem examination will be carried out tomorrow.

It is the second murder this weekend, and gardaí are continuing door-to-door inquiries into a murder in Leixlip, County Kildare, which happened shortly after midnight on Friday night.

Oliver Lacey, who was 51-years-old, was set upon by a gang of about ten youths outside his home.

Reports indicate that he was attempting to help two people hiding from a gang in his front garden when he was attacked.

He was taken to hospital in Blanchardstown, where he later died but the results of the post-mortem have not yet been made known.
