Leading academics seek return of third-level fees

10/08/2005 - 07:50:18
A group of leading academics has reportedly called for the reintroduction of third-level fees to raise funds for Irish colleges and universities.

Reports this morning said the Royal Irish Academy had warned that third-level institutions needed additional funds of €450m a year to bring up to the same level as their European counterparts.

The Organisation for the Economic Co-operation and Development also recommended the reintroduction of third-level fees in Ireland a number of years.

The Government was set to implement the recommendation until a public outcry and opposition from the Progressive Democrats forced a change of plans.
