Financials help ISEQ into the black

The ISEQ performed strongly today, buoyed by financial shares, to close this evening up 29.17 points to 6,784.93.

Banking shares fared well today. Allied Irish Bank shares climbed 22c to €18.05 while Bank of Ireland shares rose 8c to €13.23.

Shares in Anglo Irish Bank edged 3c higher to €11.23 while Irish Life & Permanent shares climbed 7c to €14.57.

Meanwhile construction shares were also on the move today.

Building materials group CRH climbed 17c to €22.92 today.

Readymix shares climbed 4c to €2.19 today as the company announced profit figures today. Profits at building materials group Readymix fell by 23% in the six months to June 30, compared to the same period last year.

Profits (excluding property disposals) were €7.6m, compared to €9.8m last year. Turnover, at €125.3m, increased by 2.9% compared to the first half of 2004.

Among the share fallers today were Elan, which slipped 15c to €7.15 while energy group Viridian saw shares fall 20c to €11.10.

The most traded shares today were Bank of Ireland, AIB, Ryanair, CRH, and Anglo Irish Bank.
