Gardaí clamp down on Bank Holiday drunk drivers
31/07/2005 - 10:14:10Motorists are being warned there are extra gardaí on the roads this bank holiday weekend to clamp down on drunk drivers.
There have already been a number of serious accidents so far this weekend.
Some 6,000 people have been arrested for being over the limit this year - up 16% on last year.
Superintendent Declan O'Brien says the net is closing in on offenders.
“June Bank Holiday weekend we rolled out a similar type operation - highly publicised, high visibility”, he said.
“That weekend we arrested 346 people for drink driving, compared with 295 for that weekend the previous year."
