Motorists are being warned there are extra gardaí on the roads this bank holiday weekend to clamp down on drunk drivers.

There have already been a number of serious accidents so far this weekend.

Some 6,000 people have been arrested for being over the limit this year - up 16% on last year.

Superintendent Declan O'Brien says the net is closing in on offenders.

“June Bank Holiday weekend we rolled out a similar type operation - highly publicised, high visibility”, he said.

“That weekend we arrested 346 people for drink driving, compared with 295 for that weekend the previous year."
