Tribunal awards costs to witnesses with no lawyers

29/07/2005 - 08:26:31
The Mahon Tribunal has reportedly awarded €2.26m in legal costs to almost 70 individuals and companies who co-operated with its inquiries into planning corruption in the past five years.

Reports this morning said the decision came despite the fact that those concerned never applied for legal representation at the tribunal.

Previously, the inquiry only awarded costs to people who had been granted legal representation.

However, it has now reportedly decided that more flexibility would end up saving money in the long run as the present situation was discouraging some people from getting legal representation.

The tribunal is reportedly of the view that dealing with individuals directly would incur significant extra costs.

This morning's reports said those awarded money yesterday included the wives of George Redmond and Ray Burke.

Both men had their own applications for costs rejected because they failed to co-operate with the inquiry.
