Lachlan Murdoch resigned today as an executive at his billionaire father Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp.

The younger Murdoch, 33, long considered a possible heir to the news empire, is to move to Australia with his family.

“I look forward to returning home to Australia with my wife, Sarah, and son, Kalan, in the very near future,” he said in a statement.

“I would like especially to thank my father for all he has taught me in business and in life. It is now time for me to apply those lessons to the next phase of my career.”

Rupert Murdoch, 74, said: “I am particularly saddened by my son’s decision and thank him for his terrific contribution to the company.”

Lachlan Murdoch joined the company in 1994 and has been deputy chief operating officer since October 2000. He will leave that position on August 31 but remain as a director and adviser

His younger brother, James, currently runs satellite broadcaster BskyB.

New York-based News Corp owns numerous media enterprises including The Sun, The Times, News of the World, Fox News Channel and Twentieth Century Fox.
