French delight as unemployment falls

France’s unemployment rate fell in June for the first time in more than four years as more young people found work, national statistics agency Insee said Friday.

In a boost for the French government, which has made tackling unemployment its top priority, Insee said the jobless rate slipped to 10.1% in June from 10.2 percent in May.

Economists had predicted it would stay unchanged at 10.2%, a five-year high, for the fourth straight month.

The jobless rate had risen steadily since March 2001, when it dropped to 8.6% from 8.7% the previous month.
