Benitez praise for resilient Reds
Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez was satisfied with his team’s come-from-behind Champions League victory in Lithuania tonight.
The European champions trailed but hit back to lead at the interval with goals from Djibril Cisse and Jamie Carragher – the defender’s first for the club since January 1999.
And Steven Gerrard capped a 3-1 win with a 54th-minute penalty – awarded after he had been fouled inside the penalty area.
The result means the Reds are in a strong position going into next week’s second qualifying round second leg at Anfield.
And Benitez said afterwards: “We conceded a goal but we had clear chances after scoring three – we had many chances.
“It’s a good result – we only made one mistake during the game.
“All the team worked hard.
“It was difficult for Peter Crouch in his first official game but I thought he did a good job – as did all the players.”
Asked if he thought Liverpool were in a good position to reach the final qualifying stages of the competition, the Spaniard added on Sky Sports: “I think so – but in football you don’t know.”
