Empey wants IRA action, not words
Ulster Unionist Party leader Reg Empey has said that unionists will not be satisfied with any statement from the IRA this week unless it is followed by real action.
The Provisional IRA is widely expected to issue a statement on its future intentions before the end of the week.
Earlier this year, Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams called on the organisation to declare an end to its armed struggle and commit exclusively to peaceful means.
Speaking last night, Mr Empey said: "We've had statements that said they would deal with their weapons in a manner to maximise public confidence.
"That was five years ago, so you'll forgive everybody if they're sceptical. What we really want is to see what they actually do.
"If that is done and done convincingly, then I think there'll be a positive response."
