Briatore warns Renault to remember Milan

25/07/2005 - 15:28:18
Renault boss Flavio Briatore has warned his “dream team” to recall AC Milan’s Champions League heartbreak if they start to believe they are already world champions.

Passionate Italian Briatore and Renault find themselves in a similar situation to AC Milan because with seven grands prix of the Formula One season remaining, Fernando Alonso has a 36-point cushion on nearest rival Kimi Raikkonen.

It is a gap that appears unlikely to be bridged, but Briatore knows anything is possible in sport and it is why he is preaching caution.

“In sport, you never think about winning before something is over, so although I will go to the factory and congratulate all the people, I will also make sure we continue to push harder in the next two months," said Briatore.

“You should never give up pushing hard because I remember Milan were winning 3-0 in the Champions League final against Liverpool.

“You cannot give your competitor a chance, and while McLaren are under more pressure after this result and they have a bigger job to do, they are still very strong.

“I’m sure they are also pushing hard, so we need to be competitive and be on the podium all the time.”
