Householders hope to return home after fire
23/07/2005 - 11:21:33More than 100 homeowners forced to flee after a major fire broke out at a derelict garage in East Belfast should be allowed to return to their properties later today.
Residents on Avoniel Road were evacuated and roads closed off last night after gas cylinders exploded, threatening surrounding properties.
Divisional officer Ken Leathem said firefighters are cooling a 5ft cylinder and will conduct two risk assessments before the area is declared safe.
Mr Leathem said: “We will be carrying out risk assessments at noon and at 4pm.
“Hopefully after 4pm the residents will be able to return to their homes.”
An emergency centre was set up for those affected at the Avoniel Leisure Centre but it is understood the majority were able to spend the night with family and friends.
