Govt condemns "cruel and senseless" Egypt bombing

23/07/2005 - 18:04:32
The Government is condemning last night's bomb attacks at an Egyptian tourist resort which killed 83 people.

Foreign Minister Dermot Ahern called the blasts in Sharm-el-Sheikh a "cruel and senseless attack" deliberately designed to kill and injure innocent people.

He said the attack would only strengthen the international community's resolve to combat terrorism.

President Mary McAleese has also sent a message of sympathy to the Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak.

Irishman Gary O'Mahoney, who lives in Sharm-el-Sheikh, said there was panic everywhere. "It was about 1.15am when the first explosion was heard and that created a huge dust cloud,” he said.
