Terror attempts leave travel chaos in London

21/07/2005 - 18:06:52
Hundreds of thousands of London workers faced travel chaos on their journeys home tonight because of huge disruption to Tube and rail services caused by today's explosions.

Many London Underground services were hit by the latest outrage, which forced station closures for the second time in a fortnight.

A suspect package near St Albans railway station forced Midland Mainline to stop trains running into or out of St Pancras in London, one of the busiest rail terminals in the British capital.

London Underground said it was working hard to return Tube services to normal, but commuters faced a difficult journey home because of the disruption.

Five Tube lines were suspended during the afternoon because of the security alerts which gripped the capital.

The incidents at Warren Street, Oval and Shepherd’s Bush Tube stations led police to evacuate the areas.

Services on the Bakerloo, Victoria, Hammersmith & City, Piccadilly and Northern lines were all suspended in the aftermath of the explosions.

The suspicious package in St Albans was left on a pavement, 80 yards from the station in Richmont Road.

Bomb-disposal experts were called to the scene, the station was evacuated and a cordon thrown around the area.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Ian Blair urged Londoners to return to normal this afternoon in the aftermath of the latest outrage.
