Bombers went whitewater rafting before attack

21/07/2005 - 11:04:33
A watersports centre confirmed today that two of the London bombers took part in a whitewater rafting trip just weeks before the attacks.

Mohammad Sidique Khan and Shehzad Tanweer rode the rapids with four other men at Canolfan Tryweryn, the National Whitewater Centre, in Bala, north Wales.

Photographs of the trip show Khan raising a two-fingered peace sign and Tanweer leaning forward and appearing to laugh.

One of their friends gives a thumbs-up and the other a wide grin for the camera.

Just one month after the fun-filled trip, which took place on June 4, 30-year-old Khan’s bomb killed six commuters at Edgware Road and 22-year-old Tanweer killed himself and seven others at Aldgate.

A Canolfan Tryweryn spokesman said: “Following liaison with the police, we are now able to confirm that customers with the names Sidique Khan and Shehzad Tanweer took part in a whitewater rafting trip on June 4.”

It is believed both men organised outdoor adventure trips for young Muslims from Leeds.

Canolfan Tryweryn is the leading national centre for recreational canoeing and rafting, attracting 80,000 visitors a year.

The centre attracted worldwide media attention last summer when Deputy British Prime Minister John Prescott was involved in the rescue of a stricken canoeist.

The River Tryweryn is a dam-controlled river that flows into Lake Bala, in Snowdonia.
