McGrath smashes England batting attack
21/07/2005 - 17:24:21Glenn McGrath joined cricket’s hall of fame today by becoming the fourth player in history to claim 500 Test wickets on the first day of a first Ashes Test at Lord’s.
McGrath took all five of the wickets to fall in a horrific hour for England to leave the home side at 64-5.
The Australian seamer struck with the first ball after tea to dismiss Marcus Trescothick, caught at third slip by Justin Langer, and four balls later struck again to remove Andrew Strauss as England slumped to 11 for two after earlier dismissing the tourists for a lowly 190.
McGrath follows West Indies legend Courtney Walsh, compatriot Shane Warne and Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan to the milestone on a day which had earlier been controlled by England’s attack, with Steve Harmison claiming five wickets.
