Farmers suffering from rip-off culture, claims FG

Fine Gael has warned farmers are suffering from Ireland's "rip-off" culture as Irish consumers were paying high food prices but farmers weren’t getting the benefits.

According to Fine Gael's survey, the highest mark-up was on milk, which had an average retail price of 85c a litre from which the producer only got 27c.

Fine Gael Agriculture spokesman Denis Naughten blamed supermarket chains for taking advantage of consumers.

"The consumer is footing the bill for the margins the retailer is making, and the consumer needs to become more conscious of this so that we can try and address it and ensure everyone gets a fair deal,” he said.
