Govt denies knowledge of Aer Lingus plan
The Government has denied having any knowledge of an apparent plan by Aer Lingus to make life difficult for staff in an effort to secure almost 2,000 voluntary redundancies.
Reports yesterday said the airline had planned to introduce awkward shift patterns, tedious training programmes and tacky uniforms in an effort to push staff into taking redundancy.
The company has insisted that the reports were based on a misinterpretation of a routine discussion document that was never implemented and never would be implemented.
Two Government departments and the Oireachtas Transport Committee have mounted investigations into the matter.
Asked about the matter this morning, Government Chief Whip Tom Kitt insisted that the Fianna Fáil-Progressive Democrats coalition was unaware of the document, despite the fact that it is the main shareholder in Aer Lingus.
"There was no indication of this kind of practice," he said.
