Star Trek's Scotty beamed up
20/07/2005 - 18:00:09Star Trek legend James Doohan, who played Scotty in the original television series, died today aged 85.
Canadian-born Doohan died of pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease at his home in Washington state, his agent said.
The actor was catapulted to fame as chief engineer of the Starship Enterprise.
The series, which starred William Shatner as Captain James Kirk and Leonard Nimoy as the enigmatic Mr Spock, attracted a cult following of science fiction fans.
When the series ended in 1969, Doohan found himself typecast as Montgomery Scott, and went on to star in five feature length Star Trek movies.
