Sanders stars at Yarmouth

19/07/2005 - 18:43:41
Seb Sanders showed great powers of improvisation today when he overcame a slipped saddle to pilot Extreme Beauty to victory at Yarmouth.

The rider realised there were problems over four furlongs out in the EBF/Carlsberg UK Ltd Fillies’ Conditions Stakes and looked down to assess what had happened.

But he kept a cool head as the early leaders paid for a blistering pace and Extreme Beauty was going by far the best of the field, moving ahead as they surged into the final two furlongs.

It was at that point that Sanders had to get his feet out of the irons and he did magnificently in the circumstances to bring the 5-1 chance home with odds-on shot Squaw Dance over three lengths back in second.

Brittain said: “Seb is a rider as well as a jockey. He didn’t panic.”

Extreme Beauty was placed in a Group Two race last year before losing her way, but this victory should serve as a confidence booster and Brittain believes she can press on from here.

“She was Group class last year and there is nothing to stop her winning a Listed race and we will see where she goes from there,” he added.

Banjo Patterson (4-6) completed a three-timer when victorious by three-quarters of a length in the Stanley M Threadwell Memorial Handicap.

The Geoff Huffer-trained colt looks a most progressive individual and racked up his hat-trick with a smooth display in the hands of Ryan Moore.

Newmarket-based Huffer said: “This is a very good horse. He may run on Thursday at Doncaster and after that we are looking at the Goldene Peitsche at Baden-Baden on August 28. It’s a Group Two I won a few years ago with Tina’s Pet.”

Jeremy Noseda’s team have been in great form this season and he was on the mark with New Art in the opening Britannia Pier Theatre Summer Season Maiden Stakes.

The cards didn’t fall the Gone West colt’s way on his first start at Sandown where he was a well-beaten sixth of 10 runners.

But he has clearly progressed since his debut run and comfortably turned over the the Brittain-trained hot favourite Colourpoint in the five-furlong contest at the Norfolk track.

Noseda’s charge seemed to hit a flat spot towards the business end of the race, but jockey Ted Durcan reorganised New Art (2-1) and the pair skipped clear entering the final furlong.

Once out in front the horse never looked like being headed and won well with a length and a quarter to spare.

Noseda, speaking from his Newmarket base, said: “You’ve got to forgive him for that first run – he had a bad draw at Sandown.

“Today, I thought it was a tidy effort and he will be best at five and six furlongs. We will most probably up him to a conditions or novices’ race next time.”

It was a case of 13th time lucky for Show Me The Lolly, who swept to success in the Winter Gardens Fillies’ Handicap at 4-1.

Apprentice rider Saleem Golam underlined his burgeoning talent with a copybook performance on the five-year-old mare.

Golam held her up out the back through most of the mile contest and then produced his mount over two furlongs out.

She reined in long-time leader Pragmatic close to the furlong-pole before darting on to win by half-a-length.

Three Boars (13-8) was a straightforward winner of the Pettitts Animal Adventure Park At Reedham Selling Stakes but he won’t be returning to trainer William Jarvis’ Newmarket yard, having being sold for 9,400 guineas in the subsequent auction.

There was an exciting conclusion to the Wellington Pier Maiden Stakes with May Morning (5-2) getting up in the final 50 yards to pip Moktabes, while the concluding South Pier Leisure Complex Lowestoft Handicap was taken by 25-1 shot Taragan.
