Councillors seek meeting over Rossport Five
County Councillors in Mayo have reportedly called for an urgent meeting with the Taoiseach and other government ministers to discuss how to secure the release of the so-called Rossport Five.
The five men have been in prison for a number of weeks for breaching an injunction ordering them not to obstruct work on a high-pressure pipeline being built on their land by the global oil giant Shell.
They and their supporters want Shell to process gas from the Corrib field at an offshore terminal rather than pumping it directly to a facility in Co Mayo.
Reports this morning said a meeting of Mayo County Council broke up last night without agreement on a motion calling for the construction of this offshore terminal.
The initially unopposed motion was proposed and seconded, but the Fine Gael chairman of the council ruled that it had not been adopted because he had never uttered the words "this motion is resolved".
