Ancient remains found at Louth archaeological dig
19/07/2005 - 17:00:25The ancient remains of over five hundred people have been discovered during excavations along the route of a new road in Co Louth.
The local council today confirmed that a circular enclosure had been discovered north of Dundalk, which appears to be consistent with an early medieval ring fort.
Archaeological investigations have been ongoing since last August.
Paddy Donnelly from Louth County Council said it was a significant find.
Mr Donnelly said: “It's on the site of what is an early medieval ring fort, which seems to have been later used as a cemetery.
“It was unknown prior to the investigation, and it's been as a result of our advanced contract for archaeological services that this find has happened. It's unclear yet just what the full extent of the find is.”
