Home-made device explodes in Barcelona

15/07/2005 - 09:37:13
An explosive device, made from a pressure cooker and camping gas cylinders, detonated at the entrance of an Italian car showroom in the northern Spanish city of Barcelona causing no injuries, local police said today.

The glass door to the showroom and a car parked outside were damaged.

“This looked like a home-made device,” said a police spokesman.

The device exploded at 4.30am (3.30am Irish time). Two units of police explosives experts were deployed to the scene, the police spokesman said.

This is the second time in a week that explosive devices made from kitchen appliances have detonated near buildings with Italian links in Barcelona.

On Tuesday a rudimentary bomb made from a metal coffee pot with wires coming out of it exploded outside the Italian Cultural Institute, killing a sniffer dog that had been brought by the police to examine it.

The Interior Ministry’s top official in Barcelona, Joan Rangel, said police had not ruled out the possibility the first explosion was the work of local supporters of an antiestablishment movement in Italy.

The police spokesman said it was too early to link the two explosions.
