Els off to a flier
15/07/2005 - 07:54:17Ernie Els today made the perfect start as he attempted to drag himself back into contention for the Open championship at St Andrews.
Els struggled to a first-round 74 yesterday, leaving him eight shots behind overnight leader Tiger Woods.
The world number three needed to make up ground quickly if he was to stand any chance of claiming a second Open title, and holed from seven feet for a birdie at the first.
Playing partner Darren Clarke, round in 73 yesterday, missed his birdie putt from 18 feet to remain one over.
