Public service pay lagging 10% behind private sector

The independent body that reviews pay for senior public servants has reportedly found that their salaries have fallen 10% behind the private sector in the past five years.

Reports this morning said the Review Body of Higher Remuneration had concluded that the situation had been exacerbated by the growth in performance-related pay in the private sector.

Bonuses linked to performance have become increasingly common among high-level private sector employees with comparable jobs to senior public servants.

The review group has recommended a 7.5% pay increase for these public servants, who include government ministers and hospital consultants, in order to help bridge some of the gap.
